When the Bolsheviks took power, 100 years ago, Russia was one of the most undeveloped countries in the region, especially in economic and technological terms. Even though, under the command of Tsar Nicholas II, the country with difficulty tried to industrially develop itself.
Aeronautics, a science that came to view in the world, called the attention of all countries, also Russia. Still in 1904, Nikolay Zhukovsky an engineer and researcher, created in Kuchino, in the Moscow region, the Institute of Aerodynamics. Just four years later, the Aero Club of Russia came to sight, created in an atmosphere of social convulsion that dominated most of the Russian Empire. The first piloting school was founded still in 1910, in the same year that the first biplane built with Russian technology was built in the outskirts of Saint Petersburg. The model ended up not flying, because, still during the final stage of construction, lost the competition to the French model Farman MF.11, which was granted a contract with the imperial air force.
The first Russian well succeeded project was the Ilya Muromets, developed by the legendary engineer Igor Sikorsky, who later would create a helicopter with the same, at that time as an American citizen. Sikorsky’s model, named Ilya Muromets Nr 107, was propelled by four Argus AS I engines of 100-HP each.
