CLASS 20

DIRECT Rail Services’ Type 1s Nos. 20303 and 20305 undertook railhead treatment duties from October 1, passing Barnetby at 10.25 heading for Grimsby with the 3S13/08.50 from Wrenthorpe and later at both Sheffield and Gilberdyke in charge of the 3S14/11.13 Grimsby-Bridlington leg of the diagram that finishes at York Works. Having last undertaken RHTT work on December 6 last year, No. 20302 returned to action on October 10 when replacing No. 20303 and accompanying No. 20305 on the 3S11/03.30 York Works-Sheffield. All three Type 1s were unavailable (requiring tyre turning) on October 15, however, when Nos. 20007 (green) and 20205 were hired in to begin work with the 3S12/07.26 Sheffield-Wrenthorpe RHTT passing through Barnsley at 07.55 (see also page 80).

Continuing the movement of London Underground sets Nos. 20118+20905 and 20314+20901 passed Water Orton during the early evening of October 4 with LU sets Nos. 21381/2 bound for West Ruislip. Two days later, the same quartet had charge of sets Nos. 21365/6 on the 7X08/15.48 Derby Litchurch Lane-Banbury at Tamworth. The next transfer from Litchurch Lane (sets Nos. 21331/2) occurred on October 13, handled by the same quartet of locomotives and noted while pausing in Elford Loop. Three days later, however, the blue duo of Nos. 20096+20107 ‘top and tailed’ with Nos. 20314+20901 on the Derby to West Ruislip working prior to the latter combination being replaced by Nos. 20132+20311 for the remainder of the month.

CLASS 33

ONCE a daily feature along the North Wales coast (30 years ago that is) a ‘Crompton’ revisited old haunts on October 17 when No. 33207 Jim Martin teamed up with No. 57314 on the 1Z84/06.52 Bangor-Carlisle. At Hellifield the Class 57 was removed in favour of Bulleid Pacific No. 35018 British India Line for the remainder of the journey, though still with No. 33207 at the rear. The Type 3 was back in action on October 20 when running light from Carnforth to York to double-head with No. 47832 on a charter returning to Ealing Broadway.

CLASS 37

HAVING travelled north from Glasgow Queen Street on October 3, a very clean No. 37407 was recorded at Kirkcaldy forming the 2Z03/14.16 Aberdeen-Edinburgh Waverley that same afternoon prior to taking the coach to Carlisle and thence to Gresty Bridge, Crewe the next day. The Type 3 returned to East Anglia on October 6 with eight Greater Anglia Mk.3 coaches in tow forming the 5Z69/13.20 Ilford-Norwich Crown Point. A trip to Dereham on the Mid-Norfolk Railway followed before No. 37407 headed back to the national network on October 23 with the 6Z31/16.00 Dereham-Stowmarket which also conveyed Nos. 37259 and 37602 and their RHTT wagons. Next day Nos. 37407+37409 ran light from Norwich to Derby RTC.
