Northern exposure – classics in shetland

IT’S A LONG WAY to go for a classic show, but the Shetland Classic is worth every mile on the road and at sea.

Perhaps it’s the extremely long winter nights that give you plenty of time to fiddle in the garage, but the classic scene on Shetland is astonishingly healthy. The show, now in its 18th incarnation, is held every two years and features motorbikes, cars, buses, trucks, stationary engines, bicycles and more. Visiting also means the opportunity to ride some of the best and most dramatic roads in the UK, among some of the friendliest people you could possibly hope to meet.

Exhibits come from far and wide and as well as the show there are organised rides for those who want to stay a little longer than the show weekend. The show itself is held in and around Lerwick’s largest indoor space, the Clickimin Centre. The bikes occupied the centre’s indoor bowls hall and there were 139 of them, the vast majority of which were from Shetland owners.
