The journey of a young volunteer

It’s astonishing to think that 20 years have elapsed since the first issue of Heritage Railway was published. I can still remember my father buying his inaugural copy – issue one – from WH Smith in Welshpool.

Back then, I was a teenage volunteer on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, running the Young Members’ Group with my parents. Having built up a network of fellow young volunteer friends at other railways, I started including snippets of their news in the ‘Along different lines’ section of On-Track, the volunteer newsletter I produced.

My ambition was to write a column in one of the national magazines about the activities of younger volunteers –
