Q I’m fascinated by abstract photography – but my attempts look like close-ups, rather than true abstracts. Do you have any pointers on how to get better results?

Abstract photography is much harder to get right than you’d imagine, Lorna. I think it’s hard to separate your creative brain from what the subject actually is. The best abstract photographers don’t care what it is they are photographing: they are only looking at the world in terms of light, shade, texture, colour and pattern.
