Twelve years have passed since German doctor Robert Koch shook the medical world by proving that diseases are caused by germs, thereby founding bacteriology. It's 1888 and Koch is undergoing a midlife crisis. His research on a cure for tuberculosis - Europe's scourge, proved by Koch to be caused by a bacteria in 1882 - is going nowhere.
