Is there no support for a new Cheltenham main line link?

MAY I thank you for your support of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway and the masses of publicity that Heritage Railway has given to us over the last few years. It has helped to make our railway better known to the general public and makes us volunteers very proud of what we are doing.

With regard to Michael Hills’letter on page 73 of issue 256, I thoroughly endorse the concept of our needing to consolidate the Broadway extension over a period of years (and also make provision for a possible substantial expenditure on repairing the Stanton road-over-railway bridge) prior to extending either north or south.

One thing that greatly puzzles me is the lack of any enthusiasm amongst the railway press for a viable future southern connection via a 1350-metre deviation to connect up with the Midlands Main Line. Such a connection, with a park-and-ride station next to the racecourse, is supported by Network Rail, the GWR and Gloucestershire County Council and would cost this railway zilch.

Apart from a letter of mine that you printed in issue 252, I have seen no other mention whatsoever. An explanation for such a lack of any enthusiasm
