Wolverhampton was the northernmost extremity of Isambard Brunel’s 7ft broad gauge system.
The Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway, which was at first leased by the GWR, built its station to serve the town centre in Sun Street in the Springfield area.
OWWR engineer, John Fowler, designed the frontage while Brunel himself was responsible for the layout.
The two-storey Italianate station building is built in Staffordshire blue brick. The interior of the former booking hall continues the Italianate theme, with a high, coved ceiling and full-height cornices.
