his picture was taken after a Lambrettas gig at the Dublin Castle pub in Camden Town. Our gang was called the Golden Faces, after that line in The Jam's In the City - 'and those golden faces are under 25'. In the shot are, right to left, (Department S singer) Vaughan Toulouse, Tony Lordan and 'Bethnal' Bob Waterman - both 'faces' of the 79 mod scene. We were all from different parts of London and we'd all been into punk a couple of years earlier. For us it was all about going to see bands and visiting the occasional club. So when the mod movement began to gather momentum in 1978, we were primed for it. We'd go to two or three gigs a week. I was always wary of other tribes , especially Skinheads, as they always seemed to be up for a punch-up. Not that I was any good in that area - first under the table, me!
