The celebrity Pro-Am that precedes the BMW PGA Championship is no ordinary curtain raiser. Z-listers are few and far between. It can take a lot to impress the pros, but this week it’s different. Who doesn’t want to watch Piers Morgan swipe at fresh air, or Ben Stokes smoke a driver? Robert MacIntyre stands to one side and watches on as if he were an autograph hunter. “Aye, it’s for the big players this one,” he smiles. “Maybe next year.”

The 23-year-old is a big player, however – maybe not a household name just yet, but he’s one of the leading contenders for the European Tour’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ accolade. With three runner-up spots already, plus a top-ten finish at The Open – his first Major Championship – you sense a maiden professional victory is not too far off.
