The story of Bryson DeChambeau has many chapters. Several feature slow play, emotional outbursts, subsequent apologies and, on two occasions, damage to golf courses. But for one of golf’s most polarising stars, one chapter sums up the 25-year-old Californian best.
It happened at the end of the US summer last year – by far the hottest stretch of DeChambeau’s already superb career. He had just claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season with a four-shot win from Tony Finau at the Northern Trust event in New Jersey, which kicked off the lucrative FedExCup Playoffs.
He banked a $1.6 million cheque and was hitting freakish form. A four-shot win on golf’s most competitive circuit would be considered large by most, if not satisfying. But not for DeChambeau. No, this perfectionist was unhappy with how he played the final hole at Ridgewood Country Club.
