You’re still young, so why did you decide that this summer was the right time to retire?

I just wanted to move forward with my life. Even though I’m only 28, I’ve played football for a very long time and I got to a point where I didn’t enjoy being a professional any more. I think it was all the pressure and stress of the job. The industry can take a lot out of someone and it took a lot out of me. For my own mental health and sense of sanity, it wasn’t a difficult decision to leave.

What are your proudest achievements in your career?

Overall, I’m proudest to have a career. I’ve played in more than 300 games, represented England and Team GB, and also played in the Premier
