SUBJECT: Selective Pollination
FROM: Roland the Roadie
I’m looking to pollinate just a small part of one of my outdoor plants in order to have seeds for next year. I’ve heard of farmers doing this and improving their crops year after year by only choosing the best plants each time. Is this possible? Where do I get the male pollen and how do I keep it from seeding my entire crop?
Dear Roland,
Love your name and the reference to one of the many songs that Shel Silverstein wrote for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show! The easiest way to get male pollen is to grow out a male plant, but you certainly can’t do it anywhere near your females. I suggest a secure grow tent indoors specifically for this purpose.
Once you’ve flowered the male plant and carefully collected the pollen that drops out of the male flowers
