IN COPENHAGEN I was invited to speak to the Danish Council of Ethics, an advisory body that supplies the government with wisdom. The Council wished to be informed about the Dutch euthanasia policy. The members are theologians, sociologists, doctors, ethicists, historians, and philosophers.

I have spoken on this subject to audiences in England, Germany, France, and Japan, and I have learned that of all our export products, euthanasia-the-Dutch-way is surely the least appreciated. In fact, the very notion of any form of assistance
