DARK BLOOMS

Souvenir du Docteur Jamain is a favourite rose in my garden. Its dark, velvety petals are only equalled by its opulent perfume.

In this masterclass, I will show you how to paint such a dark subject in watercolours without the final painting looking heavy or overworked. The use of granulating pigments will give the texture while the multiple glazes of transparent colours will give the dark, rich colour.

I will be using the Harmonic Shadows technique, which consists of painting the shadows first using a shadow mix made of three primaries that will be used for the subject’s colours. Creating the colour in this way will make sure that the shadow colour does not interfere with the dark
