BT

The last time Computer Music spoke to Brian Transeau – aka, producer BT – we thought we’d caught him in a good mood. Ha! That was nothing. Transeau is literally bouncing around his LA kitchen with excitement. And who can blame him? In the last 12 months, he’s released two critically-and commercially-successful ambient albums, plus the debut release from his side-project, All Hail the Silence. And, after four years of design and construction, he finally got to make music in his acoustically-treated, Blade Runner-style behemoth studio. Look at the pictures… and prepare to get jealous.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also found time to link up with developers like Cableguys, Spitfire Audio, iZotope and Plugin Alliance, co-producing a ton of revolutionary new software that will see the light of day over the next 18 months or so. And yes, that will include Stutter Edit Two.

But it’s those two albums that we’re talking about today: Between Here and You, an iTunes chart number one that was released in October, and the December follow-up, . Calling them ‘ambient’ is a bit of a cop-out, but the point we’re trying to make is that they don’t sound like a lot of people think BT sounds like. “How do I describe it?” asks Transeau with a grin. “Atmospheric, thought-provoking, contemplative, meditative music. Complex, but not over-stimulating. I’ve got one guy – a surgeon – who contacted me to tell me that he listens to it while he’s performing brain surgery. That’s awesome!”
