OSÉ SALGUERO PLACES HIS left hand around his mouth to amplify the sound. His right hand clenching the homemade cane he now needs to walk up the small mountain, he emits the quavering of the Puerto Rican Screech-Owl. In response, there’s only silence. He continues along the path, one he has walked every December for years, realizing that this time will be different. It’s not just the screech-owl; avian life around Fajardo, on Puerto Rico’s eastern coast, is far less conspicuous than usual.
