EVERY YEAR WE drove from northeast Ohio to Rhode Island to see my husband’s family. Nanny, my mother-in-law, greeted each of us at the door with hugs and kisses.

“Merry Christmas!” she said. “Tommy you’re so tall!” My son had recently turned 13 and was now only a couple of inches shorter than her. Nanny ushered us into her living room and announced, “I thought we might do something special this holiday.”
