LIGHT AND SOUND

South African photographer Jacques Van As may call Australia home now, but the 34-year-old's journey here was not a traditional one. Based in Brisbane for the last couple of years, Van As first lived in Sydney, via London and Johannesburg, his home town. He tells Australian Photography that his professional photography journey only really took off after moving to the Sunshine State, where he now specialises in landscapes, travel photography, portraiture and commercial video and photography work.

Prior to considering taking up photography as a career, Van As worked in the audio visual scene in Europe, setting up stage lighting for music concerts and later at corporate trade events. A fortuitous meeting with a representative of an Australian audio visual company at a trade event in Amsterdam resulted in a job offer in Sydney, which he jumped at.

“When I was in London I was setting up lighting systems and operating them and that’s where the photography kind of started … we would always take pictures of the lighting scenes to send through to customers.”
