The article in the October edition of CW, ‘Free to Roam’ by Cathy Anderson about two families on long-term caravan trips and their budgeting tips is a recipe for the demise of small towns.

We have been in small business in very small towns in South Australia and now in remote Queensland. We have heard a lot of money saving schemes practiced by travellers, and this article has suggestions which we are the victim of. One of the couples profiled suggested taking jerrycans to buy fuel when it is cheap in larger locations so you don’t have to pay too much.

We run a small store in a very small town of 11 residents. We have relied on travellers for sales of gas, groceries, milk, bread, coffee, fuels, hardware as well as car and RV necessities, all at the same or lower prices than neighbouring supermarkets.
