Growing up in California, John Albert Gardner III, had a troubled childhood. His parents divorced when Gardner was 10, and he claimed that his father was an alcoholic who would repeatedly beat him up.

His mother, Cathy Osborn, got full custody of her son and Gardner’s childhood was spent moving around Southern California, with a different father figure rotating in and out of his life.
