THE OLD DAYS

I have a long history with Yaffa, publisher of Fishing World. It commenced when I had an article published in a little publication edited and owned by Roger Hungerford, the Anglers Digest and Shooters Omnibus. It cost two shillings and six pence. Hungerford owned Afco Pty Ltd and published several fishing and shooting publications, including Outdoors and Fishing. They were edited by Dick Lewers (fishing) and Cyril Waterworth (shooting). Yaffa purchased Hungerford’s magazine which then became Sporting Shooter and remains a sister pblication of Fishing World today. Unfortunately, I lost most my early Hungerford editions in a disastrous flat fire in Mount Isa in 1964.

My first ever published article was in the and in 1957. It was about hunting scrub bulls with a Model 92 Winchester carbine in .25-20 calibre, a woeful under-powered calibre for such a task, but I was young and bull proof. I was paid Six pounds and 50 shilling for it, my weekly wage as a young jackaroo. I penned that article and several others out in long hand
