Like many a great idea, this one came late at night in a bar. Four Swedes challenged each other to a race to Sandhamn, on an island in the Stockholm archipelago, passing three event was held in South Africa. It consists of alternating trail running and swimming segments, switching constantly from water to land and back, and racers wear the same gear throughout (so they run in wetsuits, swim caps and goggles, and swim with shoes on). Racing with a partner is compulsory, so there are tactics involved. Apart from being fit, ‘you need to be mentally prepared to face the elements: any degree of temperature, wind and waves,’ says co-organiser Christina Geromont.
