How much sleep we get affects our health, including, a new study says, that of our heart. Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder in the US looked at the medical records of more than 461,000 adults who had never had a heart attack. They found that those who slept less than six hours a night were 20 percent more likely to have a heart attack, while those who slept more than nine had a 34 percent greater risk. On average, researchers found that the further people fell outside this range, the higher their risk. The good news? Getting between six and nine hours of sleep cut the risk of a heart attack for those with a genetic predisposition by about 18 percent.
