THE GREAT GRIEF TRIP

It took a year and a half for us to see the delivery truck with our custom-ordered 2015 4x4 Sprinter van in our driveway.

It was the largest Sprinter we could get. It was outfitted with five seats, a bathroom and a wheelchair lift, so that our oldest daughter, Gwen, and our youngest daughter, Eliza, could travel comfortably (in addition to ourselves, our middle daughter, Violet, and a caregiver or two).

Before the arrival of the Sprinter, we had taken our first road trip as a family in two separate wheelchair-accessible rental vehicles. With the Sprinter, our family had its first chance to experience the country together, in ways we’d never dreamed possible. The van not only served as a vehicle to get us to and from medical appointments that were eight hours from home; it also gave us the freedom to travel for leisure—a family first!

And travel we did. On our inaugural trip in the #vanofgort, we took the girls from our home on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Florida, then out west to
