A hundred kilometres east of Cape Town, the Kogelberg mountains roll towards the Hangklip rock formation and Pringle Bay. Along the journey, scenic Clarence Drive meanders between mountains and False Bay, from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond, giving travellers some of the most spectacular ocean views in the Western Cape.
Snug under the craggy eye of Hangklip, Pringle Bay, home to 800 or so residents (that swells to more than 3 500 in season), is part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and, as such, is surrounded by the Cape Floristic Region’s rich diversity. At 100 000 hectares, the reserve is the smallest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the frst to be declared one in South Africa.
In this seaside village, locals have opted for no streetlights, and the houses seem to merge with the fynbos and ocean. Families ride their bicycles to buy ice creams, to taste what’s cooking at the delis, to visit the popular restaurants and weekly Saturday morning market, and to join the bring-andbraais or pizza evenings.
