GREY DAYS
On Friday 6 December I culled the 100th grey squirrel in 20 months. Since moving into our current house in December 2016, I have been given permission to shoot 15 acres of immature woodland, which is accessible from my backdoor.
In the past 11 months I have culled 54 of the pests but as there is no ‘I’ in team I should mention the other members: Beth and Gwen, two talented labradors, mother and daughter [pictured below].
It would be wholly truthful to say that we would not have achieved more than 10% of the bag without Gwen, who has developed the most remarkable ability to identify squirrel scent up to 50 metres away. She then hunts them into the not-so-tall trees and stands on guard until I arrive and take the shot.
