Congratulations to deputy editor Joanna Wane (left), who won the trophy for Excellence in Emergency Communication at the 2019 EMPA Awards for her January cover story A non-profit organisation that operates in both Australia and New Zealand, EMPA (Emergency Media and Public Affairs) supports effective communication between emergency response agencies and communities in times of disaster. Board member Michele Poole says Wane’s award recognises “the critical role media has to play in risk reduction, readiness, response and recovery”. The winning story looked at the dangers posed by natural hazards throughout New Zealand, and included a commissioned graphic (below left) that identifies key areas of risk. content of a “protected disclosure” that was submitted to MidCentral DHB under the provisions of the Protected Disclosures Act 2000. The disclosure was about patient management issues and included concerns raised about the care provision to a particular patient. The DHB claims I submitted a document that fully discloses the identity of the patient. I
