A ustralia had a population of less than five million in 1914, but by the end of the war 416,809 men had enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) – around eight per cent of the population! It is, therefore, quite likely that Anzacs are present in your family tree, and the discovery of family military memorabilia – such as photos, discharge papers, Anzac cap and collar badges, medals or medallions, and souvenir reunion menus – is often the first clue that your ancestor served.
