“I left school at 14-and-a-half. Dad was working down at the Billingsgate fish markets in East London and, back in those days, you followed your father… an East End cockney thing. We’d start work at 5.30 in the morning and, in autumn, spring and summer you’d get the mist off the Thames River and they still had cobblestone streets and gas lighting along the embankment.
