AN ELITE PROVENANCE

In an age when technology is constantly morphing into new fields there’s something immensely reassuring in seeing an Albion press in operation. Former commercial and graphic artist and designer Tara McLeod has the printing press set up in his studio at Orewa, north of Auckland, and he uses it to create beautifully designed, handprinted material.

“The Victorian technology was built to last more than 100 years,” he says, “and the basic process of printing on the Albion hasn’t changed much since the days of Gutenberg. It is basically ‘relief’ printing — raised, flat surfaces of lettering are inked, paper is laid on top, and pressure is applied.”
