When You Need The Magnum’s Edge

WHILE magnum-calibre rifles aren't needed for most hunting, more hunters are beginning to believe this as we witness the number of new magnum cartridges that have been introduced recently - and that are still appearing at an unbelievable rate.

While I don't see the need to use a large-bore magnum for hunting sambar deer in the Victoria Alps, a .338 Win. Mag. allows increased confidence when trying the drive a 250gn bullet into the boiler room of a fleeing stag at 200 yards via a rear end raking shot. There’s more chance that you'll succeed with the .338 than you would with say, a .30-06.

You can argue that every sportsman should attempt to wait for a good clear shot before he presses the trigger. That sounds fine, but lets face facts. Reality dictates the days are gone when every hunter
