The fight against rhino poaching was given a boost with the introduction of the National Environmental Monitors Programme back in 2012. Since then, this worthy initiative – the brainchild of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) – has expanded to tackle wildlife crime across the board as well as to conserve biodiversity. According to Pitso Mojapelo, DEA Deputy Director for National Programmes, the programme has been so successful that the Department is likely to allocate an estimated budget of R300m
