Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia

Bold, experimental and political work from Indonesia’s most outstanding artists practicing since the fall of President Suharto, 1998, and his repressive ‘New Order’ regime, take a deep-dive into local and global issues such as social disobedience and the relationship between family and nation. With the advent of democracy, and the unfamiliar terrain it offered, we observe a number of younger artists strong on the scene speaking from personal experience and the wellspring of art-schools and educators who now adopt a critical lens.
