he life of a stubborn plonker who’s scared stupid of flying can get a bit complicated sometimes. It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve got in an aeroplane for a domestic flight, during which time I’ve averaged about 50,000km a year behind the steering wheel of a car because of my aversion to leaving the ground. In all of that time I’ve never whined about all the driving I do — until the last few weeks. If you’re going to have a stupid, irrational, and illogical hang-up about travelling via a mode of transport which is generally regarded as 10 times safer than travelling in a car, then don’t bitch about the time you spend in a car, right?
