THERE ARE MULTIPLE reasons why a home birth tops the list for many women looking for a rewarding birth experience. “It gives you a sense of autonomy,” says midwife Ruth Ehrhardt, who’s been attending to women in labour from her base in Muizenberg for six years. She is the co-founder of Home Birth South Africa (homebirth.org.za). “Having control over your environment and procedures, and who’s present, and being able to call the shots, as well as the feeling of safety your own home gives you, are all extremely beneficial.”
