JASON RAINBIRD

For a young buck, Jason Rainbird’s been on the scene for a while. Almost four years have passed since his first major part was released for Nike SB, and if you’re not in the know, you might wonder where he’s been. Well, he’s all grown up now – the 21-year-old is sporting a fresh driver’s licence, he just got on Pass~Port and he’s got multiple video parts in the works. It seemed like an appropriate time to catch up on the life and times of Jason Rainbird, so Keegan Walker and I sat down with him at the Nike HQ in Abbotsford to pick his brain. Here’s what he had to say about growing up in the ’burbs, the glory days of Lincoln Square and his plans for what’s shaping up to be a busy year. – Geoff Campbell

KW: Let’s get started. How old are you and where are you from?

JR: I’m 21 years old and I’m from Dandenong.

KW: Which is just out of Melbourne, right?

JR: Yeah, it’s about 30 kilometres out of the city, so a 40-minute drive or something. I just got my licence and drove in for the first time. I usually get the train, though.

GC: Do you think you will ever move to the city? Surely it would be easier having a place so you don’t have to spend an hour on the train to meet up every day?

JR: I’ve thought about it, and yeah, of course it would be a lot easier for me and way less of a hassle, but I really do love it out here. It’s still a treat for me to come into the city. It’s nice riding the train and listening to my headphones – most of the time, anyway.

KW: How often do you come into the city?

JR: Just a few days a week, and then most weekends I stay at ‘The House’.

GC: Tell us a bit about The House and your favourite events or happenings from being around there?

It’s the home of Tully [West], Bol [Lual], Dargs [Jack Dargan], DG [Mitch Cunningham] and Brunsy [Dylan
