he format for the Cowes Torquay powerboat race is roughly the same every year. Me and my race boat mad friend Adrian wander down to the end of Haldon Pier to watch the boats in. One by one they appear, hurtling into the bay, racing across the line before throttling back, describing a lazy and motor past the massed throng to admire the boats from water level before taking our place amongst the spectator boats inside Turn One so that we can enjoy the thunder of a gazillion unsilenced horsepower. It’s brilliant!
