Running down the garden to my mum, I squealed with utter excitement.
‘Bill Brookman asked me out!’ I whooped.
‘We’ll have to ask your father before you agree to anything,’ my mum Clare, 54, replied, watering the plants.
My happiness quickly fizzled.
It was 1978, and I was 16.
I’d known Bill, then 21, for a few years.
He was a friend of my brother’s and I had a bit of a crush on him.
As a spotty teen in specs, I couldn’t believe he was interested in me.
