It might sound silly, but when you decide to have a family, you suddenly notice there are babies everywhere. They’re in the latest social-media snaps posted by people you haven’t spoken to in years, they’re opposite you on the train, being placated by an obviously exhausted parent. Most people smile in their direction, ‘like’ the photo or comment on how cute they are. But when you’re unable to have a child, a gurgling baby is a stinging reminder of the pain and heartbreak you’ll carry with you until the end of your days.
