Science says you’ll be better off if you’re regularly getting it on. A recent study by British consultant clinical psychologist Dr David Weeks revealed that couples who had sex at least three times a week looked up to 10 years younger than their age. The rush of hormones serves our body up an intoxicating cocktail of serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine that fights inflammation, boosts our immune system and can even improve skin elasticity. So that postcoital glow isn’t just a figment of your fantasies.
“Sex and pleasure are a huge part of our health and wellbeing — just as important as eating well and exercising regularly. Our sexual energy is our life force. “Honouring our sexuality increases our connection to ourselves and to our loved ones, it gives us an ability to move stagnant energy in our body and unblock old emotions that we push down. As women, we can also experience a heightened connection to our womb space, which holds a lot of wisdom and intuitive power.” Chantelle Otten, psycho-sexologist and director of the Australian Institute of Sexology and Sexual Medicine, agrees. “Pleasure feeds directly into other health benefits such as elevating our mood and improving our sleep.” Having a healthy sex life could even give you an edge at the office. “It relieves stress and keeps us feeling balanced, which is critically important in managing extreme careers,” Otten adds.
