Now known as one of the most cosmopolitan and trendy parts of the capital, in the late 1950s, Notting Hill, in west London, was a place of grimy streets and overcrowded flats.
Since the end of the Second World War, there had been an increase in African-Caribbean migrants to Britain.
Many of them made their home in Notting Hill – partly for the cheap rents.
