JUNIPER HOUSE

deadline, Dylan Farrell Design pulled off a stunning interior renovation and decoration of a four-bedroom Sydney home. To create a modern home for a young family – before the owners’ wedding day in three months! All the interior surfaces were to be The existing architecture had clean surfaces, reasonable proportions and a generous floor plan. But the finishes, fit-out and interior structure were degrading and short-cut, so an overhaul was required. In the master suite, we cleared the colonnade of east-facing water view windows that had been interrupted by walls and casework and continued to remove superfluous walls, joinery and structures to simplify the spaces and broaden the perspectives. Nicolette (his wife and business partner) and I wanted to use quirky shapes, colours and proportions in the decor to offset and remove the signature from the sheer late-modernism of the structure; we wanted to work with an existing concrete finish, so we extended the footprint of this materiality; and because of timing, we designed intentionally modest joinery that employed quarantined charisma. This interior was a jazz-like exercise, where one idea bled and fed into another, creating a linear aesthetic freight train. Downstairs, we created what reminds me of a pared-back urban carnival. Upstairs, we retreated from these aesthetics but the feel is like chapters in the same story, regardless of the different mood. Exaggerated forms and colours tempered by razor-sharp adjacent details and tones. Our ‘Wonderland’ wall sculpture at the entry is the first edition of this piece, which the clients generously purchased at our furniture launch last year. It pairs nicely with our ‘Sail’ sconces designed for Jean de Merry. We also love the triangular relationship between the Pierre Augustin Rose chair, the Stephen Ormandy sculpture and the Dale Frank artwork. The shapes and colours combine to create an original tune. They love it, thankfully! I see them regularly using the oversized kitchen island to prepare large family meals that are enjoyed at the central dining area; activities flow seamlessly from the kitchen to dining to living to exterior.
