He described the move as a “dream coming true”. How could it be anything other? For this young German, growing up and dreaming of F1, following Schumacher’s path into Scuderia Ferrari is the stuff dreams are made of.

And they made a dream start, winning their second race together, a victory against the odds in the oppressive heat of Malaysia.

They did it again twice more – in Hungary and Singapore – and with three races to run Vettel was even ahead of Nico Rosberg in the world championship, only undone by a crash in Mexico and a late Rosberg run of form amid Lewis Hamilton’s celebratory comedown.

From the moment Vettel first turned wheels in pre-season testing at Jerez, he looked a driver reborn in Ferrari red. Vettel called it “the right step at the right time” to leave Red Bull, and his supreme form in 2015 was vindication of that.
