Hunters and hunting groups united and with the help of the Game Animal Council (GAC) we met a compromise with DOC. This was a breakthrough in NZ game management and the first time in recent history that the government and hunting groups found a middle ground for control work.
Like many others, I was doing all I could to try and halt the impending doom of the tahr herd. Part of this effort involved raffling off one of my wilderness hunts with all donations going toward the newly formed Tahr Foundation.
As I drew the name of the winner for the hunt, one thing surprised me. Not the number of people who donated, but their locations. I expected a large number of locals and a few international hunters but there was a much larger number of internationals than I expected and the winner was a certain Hans Berggren from Sweden.
Now why was a man from Sweden donating to the Tahr Foundation in NZ? Granted, my audience through social media is both domestic and international, but it was still surprising to see so many people, who seemingly would not feel the impacts of our government’s tahr control, donating to a newly formed foundation.
