Curlycoats, flatcoats and wavycoats have competed with each other for the favour of fieldsportsmen as retrievers of game. Spaniels also have enjoyed a considerable amount of esteem. A little over 100 years ago the Irish water spaniel had a great vogue.
But despite the preference now of sportsmen for what may be described as orthodox game dogs, there is no reason why dogs of unusual breeds should not be trained to flush and collect game.
