LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

When reading about the history of Scotland, it often appears as though the Kingdom of Scots went from being a tribal patchwork of states into a feudal Kingdom overnight during the reign of King David I. What this view forgets, however, is that King David’s success built on the hard work and perseverance of his father and predecessor King Malcolm III.

Due to erroneous recording by medieval chroniclers, such as William of Malmesbury, it is common for historians to believe that Malcolm III was a somewhat ill-educated lout who was led around by his far more educated wife.

This is an incorrect assumption and one that ignores the many positive attributes that Malcolm himself held
