I grew up in Surrey, and since the Isle of Wight Rally in 1983 I was dedicated to the national rallies. That was until late summer 1986. Reading through Scootering magazine, I came across a write-up for the Eurovespa rally, which I believe was in Barcelona that year, with loads of photos, including a few faces I recognised. In an instant I decided that I wanted to go further afield – there were rallies taking place in Europe, and I fancied a bit of that.
I contacted the Vespa Club of Britain requesting membership so that I could attend the following year, but was told that I had to be a member for at least a year before I could apply. I didn’t bother.
The next year, with the summer approaching, I started to look for riding companions. A few lads from Junction 13 were going, but being a few years older they had their own plans, and none of my close mates were going. No
