Despite being a passionate – and loud – advocate of the wildlife just beyond our doorsteps, I’m sometimes as guilty as the next person of ignoring what’s right under my nose. Ever since moving to our 1950s semi in Bristol’s rural Chew Valley, I’d been aware of the thrilling presence of bats tucked away in our garage attic. But due to the demands of work, family and the pull of seemingly more charismatic wildlife, I hadn’t quite taken my chiropteran research to the next level.
