BACKGROUND TO…

Delibes entered the Paris Conservatoire aged 12, where he eventually(1855) led to a series of popular short works in that genre. While second chorus master at the Paris Opéra, he achieved success in ballet, contributing to (1866), then writing the full-length ballet (1870), the success of which enabled him to turn entirely to composition. His operas include (1873), (1880) and (1883).
